Baking soda is a great ally in many everyday situations, and it's also incredibly helpful in the kitchen. Non-toxic and biodegradable, baking soda comes in a white powder form. It's especially effective when used as a paste.

If a stainless steel pan catches fire, you should do the following:

Mix baking soda with a little water to form a paste.
Boil for a few minutes.
Let it cool.
Scrub with a non-abrasive sponge or brush to remove any burnt-on residue.
Ideally, let the baking soda sit overnight. You can use this method for stainless steel pans that experience the same problem.
